Phoebe has been a Florida dog her entire life. I just wanted to get that out there because she has an almost obsessive fascination with frogs.
Tree frogs, toads, whatever kind of frog comes hipping, hopping, jumping, croaking or singing - there she is - sniffing, pawing, pulling, climbing, jumping, whining, moaning (yup - moaning) and crying to get to these little creatures that she wants to learn about.
She's never hurt one. Its as though she understands the size difference and fragility issues. She is, after all, an 88 pound dog.
One summer night we were outside and Phoebe went into 'frog mode' - she froze, stared then taking little tiny steps she crept up to the frog on the side of the house. I don't know if the frog was curious or just stupid, but it sat there watching the dog approach. When she got within 6 inches of the frog she stopped, her body quivering from tip to tail. Stretching her neck, she sniffed and the frog jumped - on her head then onto the sidewalk. Phoebe took one of her paws and laid it on the frogs back - she lowered her nose, sniffed, stared then took her paw away.
The frog and the dog stared at each other for a moment. Sure, I'd like to believe it was some cosmic moment of understanding between species but I'm pretty certain the frog was trying to figure out an escape route and Phoebe was just, well, Phoebe is just Phoebe.
